Military History
Here at Bill Walsh, we are proud to support our nation’s military organizations. One way we like to do that is by sending care packages through Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit organization. Our military has played a large role in our nation since our very beginning. Near Ottawa, Illinois, there are numerous military bases, including an Illinois Army National Guard Base, Scott Air Force Base, and others. Here is a brief history of some of the branches of the military.

National Guard

The National Guard is the only branch of the military actually required by the Constitution. Each state is required to maintain a standing National Guard. The history of the National Guard dates back to December 13, 1636, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony formed three militia regiments to defend against Native American threats.

The formation of an official United States Army dates back to June 14, 1775, when The Second Continental Congress formed the Continental Army to unify the 13 American colonies against the British forces. George Washington was chosen as the Army’s first Commander-In-Chief.

Marine Corps

November 10, 1775 is considered the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. This force distinguished itself during the Revolutionary War, serving on both land and sea. One of the main roles of the Marines is to execute shore landings in times of war. The first of those was in 1776, when Captain Samuel Nicholas led a Marine force to capture British-occupied New Province Island in the Bahamas.

Air Force

There were a number of military flight organizations that led up to the official formation of the United States Air Force on September 18, 1947. Those included the Aeronautical Division of both the Army and Navy.

The United States Navy was officially formed on October 13, 1775. Since then, it has served a critical role in our nation’s defense, as well as providing aid to those in need.
